Jaipur Metro's first train was flagged off by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Wednesday, heralding a new era of modern, urban public transport in the pink city.
The city now joins the elite club of Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata that have metro rail.
The service will initially run from Mansarovar to Chandpole covering 9.63 km, according to Nihal Chand Goel, the CMD of Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC).
Ten trains, each having four coaches, will undertake 131 trips everyday and are expected to carry about 1.2 lakh passengers. The frequency will be 10 minutes during peak hours and 15 minutes during off-peak hours, reports India Today.

About metro rail service
Jaipur Metro's Phase-1 was completed in nearly four-and-a-half-years, making it one of the fastest-built rail metros in India.
The first phase of the metro cost ₹2,023 crore, according to JMRC officials.
The trains will start operating at 6.45 am daily and finish the last trip at 9 pm. The rail fare will be ₹5, ₹10 and ₹15. Some seats will be reserved for women.
Jaipur Metro is women-friendly; a fourth of the 24 metro operators are women.
"Women make up 30 per cent of our staff. Women are doing everything here, from controlling stations to running trains. Jaipur Metro represents a bold step in terms of women's empowerment," JMRC CMD NC Goel told The Indian Express.
