India's national capital is often termed as the "rape capital" owing to the high occurrences of heinous crimes against women. However, it has now emerged that Delhi is also a favourite place for petty criminals stealing mobile phones. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) statistics, the city recorded 16,362 cases of mobile handset theft, which is more than 43% of India's total 37,878 cases. Of these, only 1,081 phones could be recovered. Maharashtra (5,697), West Bengal (2,049), Uttar Pradesh (1,798), Karnataka (1,750) and Bihar (1,591) were some other states with high occurrences of mobile phone theft.
