Film stars across the nation wished Malayalis on the occasion of Onam. The God's Own Country is celebrating the festival on Wednesday, Sep. 14. Cutting across language barriers, film personalities from Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema extended their greetings to the Keralities.
Mythology
Onam is celebrated by people belonging to all the religions in Kerala, which makes it a unique festival. As per Hindu mythology, 'devas' got insecure and jealous of King Mahabali's popularity. Hence, they requested Lord Vishnu to prevent the King from further expanding his wings by ending his reign.
As per the request made by 'devas', Vishnu, disguised as a poor Brahmin boy called Vamana, met Mahabali to request him to give a piece of land which equals three of his strides.
The generous king agrees. His first step covers the skies and the second, the whole of earth. When there was no space for Vamana's third foot, Bali requested the boy to keep his foot on his head, which forces him down to 'paathalam.' However, Lord Vishnu gave him a boon that he could visit Kerala once a year to visit his subjects. Thus, Keralities celebrate the visit of King Mahabali to the state during this time.
