US President Donald Trump has called for changes to a Russia sanctions bill that could impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries, including India, that continue to buy Russian energy. While backing the broader objective of the legislation, Trump said it would be better if the bill also gave him wider authority to impose tariffs on Iran rather than relying only on sanctions.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said such a change "shouldn't be necessary," but added that if lawmakers move ahead with the legislation, they should include provisions allowing tariffs on Iran. His proposal could delay the bill as it heads to the US House of Representatives for consideration.
The bipartisan legislation, which has advanced in the US Senate, is aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine. The bill would empower the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from countries that continue purchasing Russian oil and other energy products. India, China and several other major buyers of Russian crude could be affected if the measure becomes law.
India has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian crude since the Ukraine conflict began, maintaining that its energy purchases are driven by national interest and energy security. New Delhi has also stated previously that it is closely monitoring developments related to the proposed US legislation.
The proposed tariffs have sparked concerns over their potential impact on global trade and India-US economic ties. However, the legislation still requires approval in the House of Representatives before it can reach the President's desk, and Trump's suggested amendments could further alter the bill's final form.
