The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting in Lucknow, Adityanath said the decision was taken to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25-year journey of public service as the head of a government.
"The Council of Ministers of Uttar Pradesh expresses its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for gifting the state the Noida International Airport at Jewar. The Cabinet has approved a proposal to name it Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar," the Chief Minister said.
Located in Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is a major greenfield aviation project designed to serve the National Capital Region (NCR) alongside Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is expected to help ease congestion at the existing Delhi airport and improve air connectivity for western Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions.
The airport was developed under a public-private partnership between Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, and the Uttar Pradesh government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport's first phase on March 28, 2026, and commercial operations began in June. The first phase has a passenger-handling capacity of around 12 million passengers annually.

The airport is planned to expand in multiple phases, with its capacity expected to reach up to 70 million passengers annually by 2050. It is connected through the Yamuna Expressway and is expected to strengthen transport links for passengers travelling from Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi and other parts of the NCR.

The renaming proposal marks a significant development for the airport, which is expected to emerge as a major aviation hub in Uttar Pradesh. The project is also expected to support tourism, trade, logistics and economic activity across the region.
The decision adds to the list of Indian airports named after prominent political and historical figures. The formal process for renaming an airport involves consideration at the Union Cabinet level following recommendations from the concerned state government, with the final decision notified through the Gazette of India.
