On 13 February 2018, the Guardian Angels celebrate the 39th anniversary of the first patrol conducted by founder Curtis Sliwa and the original Guardian Angels. Since that first patrol on the #4 subway train in New York City, the Angels have taken their message to cities all over the world and are now a global organization. While petty crime rates in New York City have dropped substantially in the years since 1979, Sliwa and the Guardian Angels say community involvement and citizen pro-activity are what will keep cities across the globe safe, despite the looming fear of terrorist attacks and acts of mass violence.
