Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician Vijay, has renewed its demand for the complete abolition of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), saying its opposition goes beyond the recent allegations of paper leaks and examination irregularities.
In a strongly worded statement issued amid the ongoing nationwide protests over the alleged NEET paper leak, the party said NEET should be scrapped altogether and called for medical education to be brought under the exclusive control of state governments. According to TVK, states should have full authority over admissions and medical education policies instead of a centrally administered entrance examination.
The demand comes as student protests continue across the country, with demonstrators seeking accountability over the alleged examination irregularities, reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protests have intensified following clashes between students and police during the "Chalo Sansad" march in Delhi.
Reiterating the party's long-standing stand against NEET, TVK argued that the examination has consistently disadvantaged students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds and that recent controversies have further exposed flaws in the system. The party maintained that merely addressing irregularities would not be enough and insisted that the examination should be abolished entirely.
TVK also criticised the detention of Opposition leaders during the protests and expressed solidarity with students demanding a fair and transparent admission process. The party said the Centre should prioritise comprehensive reforms that protect students' interests and restore confidence in the country's examination system.
