India observed a day of national mourning on Monday following the demise of former Qatar Emir and Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. As a mark of respect, the National Flag was flown at half-mast at Rashtrapati Bhavan and on all government buildings across the country where the Tricolour is regularly displayed. Official entertainment was also suspended for the day.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had announced the one-day national mourning on Sunday, stating that the decision was taken to honour the legacy of Sheikh Hamad, who passed away on July 12 at the age of 74.

Visuals from Rashtrapati Bhavan showed the National Flag flying at half-mast in accordance with the Government of India's protocol during the mourning period. Similar arrangements were made at government offices and public buildings nationwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the late Qatari leader, describing him as a "visionary leader" who played a key role in transforming Qatar into a modern and globally influential nation. Modi also recalled Sheikh Hamad's contribution to strengthening India-Qatar ties and extended condolences to the royal family and the people of Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily handing over power to his son, the current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. During his reign, Qatar emerged as one of the world's leading liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters and significantly expanded its global diplomatic and economic influence.
