If there is a day for almost everything, why not have one for man's best friend? This is exactly what Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, did. She founded the National Dog Day (NDD) in 2004, which is celebrated on Aug. 26 every year. The day was adopted into the New York State Legislation in 2013.

National Dog Day celebrates all dog breeds — mixed and pure, and is against ban on any breed. It is observed not only to bring public awareness on the need to rescue abandoned and street dogs but also acknowledge their role in society, be it for personal protection, law enforcement, helping the disabled, and bomb detection, among other selfless services.

National Dog Day encourages people to opt for adoption from rescue shelters and discourages buying dogs from pet stores supplied by puppy mills and through media ads.

"Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect. Please consider bringing what was once considered 'unwanted love', into your heart and home on National Dog Day!" Colleen Paige says in a statement.
