The Weeknd and Adele win big
The night completely belonged to The Weeknd with the r and b hitmaker walking away with eight awards. The Cant Feel My Face singer was crowned top hot 100 artiste and top r and b artiste, while he also scooped the top r and b album for his critically acclaimed Beauty Behind The Madness.
British superstar Adele won five awards, including top artiste, top female artiste and top Billboard 200 album for her best-selling third LP 25. It was a big night for the Hello singer as she also premiered the music video for her latest single Send My Love (To Your New Lover).
Celine Dion honoured
It was a particularly emotional evening for Celine Dion who was honoured with the Icon Award in celebration of her phenomenal career. After performing a powerful cover of Queens The Show Must Go On, Celine was joined on stage by her 15-year-old son Rene-Charles before delivering a tearful speech in honour of her late husband Rene Angelil who died in January.
In her speech, Celine said she wanted to thank my beloved husband whom I know will continue to watch over me from up above.
Madonna pays tribute to Prince
Elsewhere, Madonna performed a tribute to the late rock legend Prince and was joined by another iconic singer, Stevie Wonder. The queen of pop began the segment with a cover of Princes Nothing Compares 2 U before she and Stevie duetted on Purple Rain.
But it seemed not everyone was impressed with the performance as one viewer tweeted: Prince deserved so much more than this, while another complained: Madonna killed it... and not in a good way #irrelevant.
The awards, which were hosted by Ludacris and Ciara in Las Vegas, also saw performances from Rihanna, Britney Spears, Kesha and Fifth Harmony.
