Mumbai local murder: 'I don't know what government is doing,' says Rashami Desai; Mayank Lohar's family demands death penalty for accusedinstagram

The brutal killing of 22-year-old Mayank Ramesh Lohar aboard a Mumbai local train has enraged netizens, commuters and even actors. A simple altercation led to an innocent's loss on a local train. The grieving family is demanding the harshest punishment for the accused, and fresh concerns are being raised over passenger safety in the city's suburban railway network.

Here's what exactly happened

Mayank, a resident of Virar who worked as a salesman at a private firm in Andheri, was travelling home on the Churchgate–Nalasopara Fast Local on the night of June 23. According to investigators, the incident began after an argument broke out in the first-class compartment over whether the train door should remain open during heavy rain. As rainwater entered the coach, Mayank reportedly asked another passenger to close the door.

The argument allegedly escalated into a physical altercation while the train was between Andheri and Borivali stations. Police said the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, allegedly stabbed Mayank in the abdomen with a sharp weapon before jumping off the moving train ahead of Platform No. 6 at Borivali station. He was arrested on June 24.

A video of the incident later went viral on social media, showing the accused unbuttoning his shirt and staring at Mayank as he lay bleeding on the floor of the train. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the confrontation intensified after other commuters allegedly assaulted the accused, following which he took out a knife from his bag and attacked Mayank.

The incident has also renewed concerns over security in Mumbai's suburban railway network. The Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh (MRPS) criticised the lack of effective passenger screening despite security infrastructure being installed at several major stations.

MRPS Vice President Siddhesh Desai said the incident exposed serious shortcomings in commuter safety. He pointed out that while stations such as Thane have baggage scanners, metal detectors and CCTV cameras, these systems are often not operated consistently or used for systematic screening. Unlike airports and Metro networks, suburban railway stations have no effective mechanism to prevent people carrying knives or other dangerous weapons from entering the system, he said.

The tragedy has triggered strong reactions on social media. In an emotional video shared online, Mayank's elder brother, Mehul Lohar, demanded the strictest punishment for the accused, saying he should either be awarded the death penalty or killed in a police encounter. His appeal has resonated with many social media users.

Rashami Desai Reacts To Mumbai Local Train Murder: 'I Don't Feel Safe At All, This Is Not New India'

Television actress Rashami Desai also reacted to the incident, expressing shock over the growing violence and questioning public safety. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram Stories, she wrote, "Anybody can kill someone and then claim to be mentally unstable. Is this the kind of security, safety and value for life we have in our country?"

In another post, Rashami said she no longer feels safe. "People won't even care whether you are there tomorrow or not. I don't know what the government is doing. Violence is increasing, rape cases continue to be reported, and it is extremely frustrating. I don't feel safe at all. This is not the India we want."
