Muharram, which means "forbidden", is derived from the Arabic word haram. It is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the four sacred months of the year.

This year, given that the month began on 15 October, the 10th day of Muharram, known as the Day of Ashura, the most sacred day, falls on Saturday, 24 October.

It is a day on which Shia Muslims mourn by recalling the incidents that led to the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD; Sunni Muslims fast on this day.
