Meta has expanded its push into paid subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, introducing new premium "Plus" plans packed with creator tools, customisation features and AI-powered capabilities as the company looks to diversify revenue beyond advertising.

The rollout marks one of Meta's biggest monetisation shifts in recent years, with the tech giant betting heavily on subscriptions and artificial intelligence to drive future growth.

According to reports, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will cost $2.99 monthly in markets where the plans are launching. Meta has clarified that the standard versions of all three apps will continue to remain free.

The company also confirmed that the new subscriptions are separate from Meta Verified, which currently focuses on account verification, impersonation protection and customer support.

What features do the new Meta Plus plans offer?

Instagram Plus is expected to include several creator-focused and engagement tools. Subscribers may get access to features such as Story rewatch counts, unlimited audience lists beyond "Close Friends", the ability to spotlight a Story for additional reach once a week, extended Story duration beyond 24 hours, viewer search tools and stealth Story previews without appearing on the viewer list.

Users may also get access to Super Heart animated reactions, custom app icons, custom fonts for profile bios, additional profile pins and expanded profile customisation options.

Facebook Plus is expected to offer similar creator and analytics-focused features, while WhatsApp Plus will reportedly focus more on personalisation and messaging tools. Features may include custom themes, premium stickers, custom ringtones, additional pinned chats, advanced list customisation and expanded chat controls.

Meta is also integrating AI-powered tools into the subscription ecosystem. Reports suggest premium users could receive access to advanced Meta AI assistants, AI-generated content tools and enhanced business integrations across apps.

Meta's Head of Product Naomi Gleit announced the rollout through a video posted on Instagram, saying the subscriptions are designed to help users "connect, create and personalise" their experiences across Meta platforms.

Are Meta's paid subscriptions available in India?

As of now, Meta has not officially confirmed a full India rollout timeline for Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus or WhatsApp Plus.

The company is reportedly launching the subscriptions in phases across select global markets first. However, industry experts believe India is likely to become a key market for the service given the country's massive Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp user base.

Currently, Meta Verified is already available in India for eligible Instagram and Facebook users, but the newer "Plus" subscriptions are still believed to be in limited rollout and testing stages globally.

If launched in India, pricing could vary from US rates due to regional subscription strategies, taxes and app-store pricing policies.

Why is Meta pushing subscriptions now?

The expansion comes as Meta significantly increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and services. The company is investing heavily in AI data centres, generative AI tools and next-generation AI models while facing pressure to reduce dependence on advertising revenue.

Industry analysts view the move as part of a broader trend among major technology firms shifting toward subscription-based revenue and AI monetisation.

Reports also suggest Meta may eventually launch bundled offerings under a possible "Meta One" subscription brand combining AI services, creator tools and premium business features into a single package.

Meta's stock reportedly gained following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism about recurring subscription revenue and the company's long-term AI ambitions.
