Many people with graduation and post-graduation degrees, including Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Technology, recently appeared for a practical examination in Uttar Pradesh to become sweepers in the Allahabad Municipal Corporation.

The examination for the position of contractual sweepers involved the graduates to clean drains. According to the Times of India, a total of 1.10 lakh candidates appeared for the examination. The physical cleaning examination was introduced by the Allahabad Municipal Corporation in 2008 to evaluate cleaning skills of the candidates.

Reports state that the minimum educational qualification required to apply for the position requires the ability to read and write Hindi.

The candidates appearing for the physical examination for cleaning aspire for around 119 vacancies for the post in Allahabad and around 100 positions in almost every district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, since there are a large number of applicants, the evaluation process is expected to take around a total of 408 days. The report also added that the recruitment of the cleaners may be further delayed if the government changes in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections scheduled next year.

Around 17,000 people, including the ones with MBA, BSc and B.Tech degrees, applied for the 114 positions of safai karamchari earlier this year in Amroha district to get a pay of Rs 17,000 a month in total. According to reports, a majority of the 8,500 applications for cleaning posts in Punjab's Bathinda district were filed by people who had MPhils, MSc, and B.Tech degrees. The 19 posts reportedly required educational qualification till class 5.
