Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has revealed the club are close to completing the signing of a new striker this summer, saying "he is in the process," while also insisting the player is not the striker the media have been linking the club to.

It is pretty clear that United will look to sign a central striker before the start of the summer transfer window, with the only question being if they can actually get the man they want considering the paucity of forwards in the market right now.

The likes of Edinson Cavani of PSG – reportedly Manchester United's No.1 target – Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski have been tipped for moves to Old Trafford, with the latest one to be strongly linked coming in the shape of Thomas Muller, another Bayern Munich man.

Reports in Germany have claimed Manchester United have made a huge bid for Muller, while the British media are also writing home about the possible signing.

Pedro Rodriguez is another player under consideration, even if the Barcelona forward is not a central striker, one who can lead the line.

However, Van Gaal, when quizzed about the "special" signing he had claimed was on the way, prior to Manchester United's International Champions Cup match against San Jose Earthquakes, gave a cheeky answer.

"He is in the process," Van Gaal said. "It's not the striker the media has written about.

"You have to wait and see. The transfer period is open until the 1 September so we have to wait."

Considering the seemingly endless money that Manchester United have to spend, it really could be anyone, and another player who could be joining is Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos.

Manchester United have been trying to include the Spain international defender in any deal that will see David De Gea move to the Bernabeu this summer.

But, with Rafa Benitez insisting he sees Ramos' future at Real Madrid, the transfer had seemingly gone cold, only for Van Gaal to not completely shut that particularly intriguing door.

"I cannot talk about these rumours," Van Gaal said when asked about Ramos, before adding: "I have said in a lot of press conferences that it's a process.

"Maybe Mr Ramos is in the process -- you never know."
