Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be ideally suited to play for the Red Devils.

"You've got to ask Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] why he hasn't played in England yet, but I'd love to see him at Manchester United," Schmeichel told Sweedish paper Expressen. "I don't know who he supports, but he's a born Manchester United player, he would be absolutely brilliant. "

Schmeichel, who is held in high regard by United supporters, believes the club's fans would love the former Barcelona striker.

"I think our supporters would love him, if he ever made that move, he wouldn't move again," Schmeichel continued. "For Zlatan to play the way we love him to play, he has to be Zlatan."

Schmeichel likens Ibrahimovic to the charismatic Eric Cantona who won  four Premier League titles with United.

"A lot of people are comparing Zlatan with Eric, Eric Cantona. He had a difficult time before he came to United," Schmeichel explained. "He [Cantona] had 11 clubs in France and a trial at Sheffield Wednesday and Trevor Francis didn't fancy him and then he had six months at Leeds and Howard Wilkinson didn't fancy him."

"But then he came to United and the rest is history," the Danish goalkeeper said. He's arguably the greatest player we've [United] ever had."

The five-time Premier League champion see's similarities with Ibrahimovic and believes a move to United could still be on the cards.

'I think he's so suited to the Premier League and he has loads of time left in his career, I hope we see him there," Schmeichel said before underlining how Manchester United is a good place for the worlds top players.

"We're a very big football club and we've had players behaving in different ways throughout the history of the club," he said. "The managers have always been able to handle that and get the maximum out of the players. "

Schmeichel made 393 appearances for the Old Trafford club between 1991 and 1999. The player's honours, apart from the five Premier league titles, include one European cup, one UEFA cup, three FA cups and one goal.
