Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Gandhiji or Bapu, was assassinated on 30 January, 1948. Nathuram Godse killed the Father of the Nation with three close range gunshots to his chest.

This year will mark the 67th death anniversary of the freedom fighter, who led India to independence in 1947.

Born in Gujarat on 2 October, 1869 to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai, Bapu has been hailed as the symbol of peace, non-violence and freedom.

On the memorial day, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted:

पूज्य बापू को उनकी पुण्यतिथि पर शत् शत् नमन। My tributes to Pujya Bapu.

Modi also paid tributes to all martyrs on this day as 30 january is observed as Martyrs' Day.

On Martyrs' Day I pay homage to each & every Martyr who laid his or her life for our Nation. Their bravery & courage will always inspire.

Gujarat state paid tribute to the national leader by observing silence for two minutes at 11 a.m. 

Various all-religion prayer meetings have been arranged at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and Kirti Mandir in Porbandar.
