Outraged individuals are accusing Narendra Modi of being a "liar" after the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate finally acknowledged that he is married, after years of claiming that he is single.
In a poll affidavit that he filed on Wednesday as the BJP's candidate from Vadodara, Gujarat; Modi has written the name of his spouse as "Jashodaben".
Modi, who has been the Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2001, has always left the field for "spouse" blank in four assembly polls. The 63-year-old has, in many occasions, flaunted his single status. At a rally in February he had said, "I have no family ties, I am single. Who will I be corrupt for?"
Modi had left the "spouse" column blank in 2012 assembly elections as well. However, for the 2014 Lok Sabha election affidavit, Modi is claiming that he has no information about assets in the name of his wife.
Congress was quick to grab the chance to dissuade voters from voting a person "who deprives his wife of her right".
"Modi accepts his Marital Status. Can Women of this Country trust a Man who stalks a woman, deprives his wife of her right? Vote against Mode (sic)," Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh tweeted early Thursday.
Modi's brother Sombhai Damodar Modi immediately issued a statement explaining the situation as Modi's 'marital status' starting causing outrage in social media. He said that their family had married him off as a child, but he had walked away from his marriage because of his desire to serve the country.
"What happened 45-50 years ago should be seen in context with the circumstances of a poor and superstitious family," NDTV quoted Sombhai Modi.
However, outraged public have taken to Twitter alleging the PM Candidate of keeping the wedding secret.
