• Dull goalless draw at Anfield sees both sides leave with a point.
  • David de Gea produces two superb saves to deny Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho.
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed Uniteds best chance in the second-half.

Full-time: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United.

Yawn. Good point for United against a Liverpool side who took far too long to wake up this evening. Jose Mourinho came here with a game plan, a bit of an unambitious one, but it worked well and his side leave with a point.

Young walks off the pitch at a snails pace as Luke Shaw comes on for the final minute of this match.

United lose the ball while trying to keep it into the corner so Fellaini strides across to hack down Can, giving the loose ball a big boot away for good measure. That will be a booking for the Belgian.

Three minutes of time added on here.

Ibrahimovic has had a very poor evening. He concedes another foul that sees a move break down and moments later, he shown a yellow card for crashing into the back of Can.

Milner is limping a bit and hes now coming off. On to replace him? Alberto Moreno...

Just over five minutes of the 90 left and Klopp is making another change, bringing on Divock Origi for Firmino.

What a tackle from Valencia! Its sublime from Coutinho, who flicks the ball on elegantly for the onrushing Firmino on the edge of the box. He breaks in from the left but just as he is about to pull the trigger, the United full-back swings a big leg across to cleanly take the ball away.

Rooney lets Milner go down the left and the Liverpool full-back pings a ball across goal that bypasses everyone. It finds its way through to Clyne on the opposite flank who fires a first time effort on goal, but it is easily cleared.

Fellaini shrugs Can off him and has a free header, but he directs it wide of Karius post.

United slow the tempo down again, moving the ball comfortably up and down the pitch. Valencia decides to force the issue, sprinting down the right, leaving Milner eating his dust, and swings a ball into the box that Can forces out for a corner.

And here comes the captain. Wayne Rooney comes on with just over 10 minutes remaining, replacing the rather knackered-looking Rashford.

Lallana holds off Pogba and threads superb ball through for Coutinho who breaks into the box and tries to slot past De Gea. The Spaniard makes the save again, but Coutinho was offside anyway.

Daley Blind is a lucky boy. He looses his footing in his own half and it invites Mane to race through. He prods a ball through for Firmino but Bailly tracks him brilliantly, following him across the box and intercepting.

Theres a break in play at the minute with Milner down clutching his head after an aerial battle with Rashford. The United striker meanwhile is struggling with cramp.

Oh my. Coutinho out of nowhere pulls the trigger from 25 yards out with a thunderbolt that seems destined for the top corner. De Gea is equal to it however, reaching across to palm it away. Another wonderful save.

20 minutes left here at Anfield.

Pogba and Milner are left in a heap inside the United box. There are appeals for a penalty, at least from the Liverpool players, anyway.

This mans introduction has lifted Liverpool. They are looking the more dangerous at the moment.

Liverpool almost squeeze through with Mane running through the United lines before freeing Coutinho inside the box, only for Blind to make a crucial interception. Liverpool are coming alive here, looking far more energetic with Lallana on the pitch.

Heres the first change of the game with the ineffective Sturridge replaced by Adam Lallana.

Brilliant save from De Gea! Its Liverpools best move of the game as Can bulldozes his way into the box, shrugging off challenges as he reaches the six yard area. The Germany international looks to have found the far corner, but the United goalkeeper gets down brilliantly to claw it away.

Oh dear. Its worked terribly, with Coutinho getting the lay-off and proceeding to run straight into trouble. United clear, no problem.

Herrera is penalised for a foul on Coutinho and he is furious. The Spaniard looked to have pulled out of the challenge in time, but Anthony Taylor gives the free kick Liverpools way.

Best chance of the game falls to United! Pogba does brilliantly, shimmying away from Henderson and swinging a superb cross into Ibrahimovic. Its a difficult chance, but he gets his header all wrong, heading across goal rather than into the far corner.

Adam Lallana, left on the bench having picked up a groin injury before the international break, is warming up on the touchline.

Clyne now plays a simple pass down the right straight out of play. Theres still too many errors from Klopps side.

Karius doing his best to terrify Liverpool supporters. He doesnt look comfortable all as he receives a back pass from Lovren and passes is straight to Pogba. Under pressure, he knocks the ball across goal first time to Ibrahimovic but the Swede cant get out quick enough and is offside.

United again are winning every 50-50 ball with Rashford and Valencia already combining neatly down the right. The away side looking the more dangerous again.

And Liverpool get us back underway for the second half.

Klopp is out on the pitch before anyone else. And he looks mad.

Half-time: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Herrera drops deep to collect a pass and has his legs clipped by Henderson. Its a near identical situation to the one that saw Bailly booked moments ago, but the Liverpool skipper gets away with it. Much to the delight of the Anfield crowd, Young is then shown a yellow for letting his displeasure a little too known.

Coutinho swings in the free kick. Straight into De Geas arms. Rinse and repeat.

Heres the first yellow card of the game and it is for Eric Bailly after he crashes into the back of Sturridge. Silly one, that.

Can loses the ball and it invites Pogba to ping an early ball forward for Ibrahimovic. He isnt quick enough to get on the end of it, however, inviting Lovren to get around him before eventually pulling the Croatian back.

Just over five minutes of the half remaining.

More good defending from United as Smalling tracks Mane after a neat one-two, kicking the ball off the Liverpool forward to win his side the goal kick.

Mane finds a couple of yards of space in the United box and tried to backheel the ball across to Sturridge but Herrera reads it excellently and takes the ball away from danger.

Liverpool again give the ball away and it gives Blind the chance to launch one forward to Ibrahimovic. All he has do is hold his line and he can break free with acres of space between him and the two Liverpool centre halves... but nope, instead he strays offside.

Liverpool now mount forward with Clyne fed cleverly on the overlap down the right, only for Young to make an excellent sliding challenge to force the corner. Again, however, its wasted by the home side.

Ibrahimovic somehow knocks a ball on for the onrushing Pogba, who chases it down with Karius slow to come out of goal. Lovren sticks with him however and puts him under just enough pressure to nick the ball away.

Its a poor delivery however with the free kick sent straight into De Geas arms. He launches upfield immediately and Young brings it down brilliantly before shifting it wide to Rashford. The two exchange passes before Young whips a cross in that has Karius in a panic, but Ibrahimovic is judged to have pushed Lovren while challenging for it.

Valencia and Herrera give away fouls in the space of 20 seconds. Herrera is maybe a bit lucky to avoid a booking there.

Finally, something from Liverpool. After some passes down the right, the ball is fed back to Henderson who lifts a cross into the far post where Firmino is waiting, but his header is straight at De Gea.

Liverpool have the ball for a sustained period for the first time all game and win a free kick as Ibrahimovic clips Mane.

So far, Liverpool havent laid a glove on United. Errors all over the shop from the home side.

Rashford throws out a step over and springs past Milner with ease down the inside right before pinging a cross in. Its put across a very dangerous area but Karius does well to push it away and out for a throw in.

Liverpool nervously let the ball bounce and it invites Ibrahimovic to swing out his enormous thigh in an attempt to win it, but in the process sends Matip crashing to the ground. Free kick for the home side.

Rashford gets the ball and tries to pick Ibrahimovic out to his right with a cross field pass. Its a poor one that is easily intercepted, but luckily for him, Liverpool waste their chance on the counter with Can firing well over from range.

Blind has the chance to get forward down the left but hammers a poor cross straight out of play.

United really have been excellent so far; Liverpool have found no rhythm so far and as very much chasing shadows for the time being with the away side using the ball very effectively.

United work the ball into Ibrahimovic who has the space to work a shot from outside the box, but a deflection on its way off Lovren drops it safely into Karius waiting arms.

Bailly hooks the ball away from Coutinho brilliantly and prompts a United counter. Rashford darts down the right, dancing inside his man before knocking the ball back to Herrera who wins another free kick,.

Rashford clattered into Milner inside the opening two minutes.

Very flat from Liverpool so far, United are winning virtually every second ball at the moment.

Blind and Young combine neatly down the left before moving the ball inside to Pogba. Rashford is making a smart run down the opposite flank but the France international instead opts for the shot from a good 30 yards out, and punts it aimlessly over the bar.

Fellaini does well to win the ball and prod it onto Pogba who tries to power his way through both Lovren and Matip. He almost manages it but never has the ball truly under control and has it nicked away from him on the edge of the box. United are pressing well in midfield so far, whereas Liverpool have been guilty of conceding a few silly free-kicks. Not what they want given their record from set pieces.

The free-kick is swung in towards the back for Fellaini but the Belgian moves too soon and is rightfully judged offside.

Ibrahimovic now has his legs clipped by Lovren and United have another chance to launch the ball into the box.

Rashford is pushed out onto the touchline and Liverpool instantly press with Firmino robbing the ball from him. The home side have a couple of attempts at swinging the ball into the box but Fellaini is back to help out before the ball is sent out for a goal kick.

Ibrahimovic steps up and.... smashes it into row Z.

Herrera drifts past one challenge and passes into the feet of Pogba, whose first touch takes him beyond Matip. The Liverpool centre-half sticks out a leg to bring him down and United have a free-kick. Its from 40 yards out, but Ibrahimovic looks like he wants to shoot....

Lovrens pass across the line is almost intercepted by Ibrahimovic, who can only usher it back to Pogba rather than take it under control. Liverpool shirts quickly surround the France international however and snuff the danger out.

Ooof, theres the first heavy challenge of the game. Marcus Rashford steams into James Milner, sending the Liverpool skipper sprawling.

And United get us underway at a rocking Anfield.

Here they come; both sides make their way out from the tunnel and onto the Anfield pitch.

As kick off approaches, heres another look at how these two sides will line up.

Liverpool team to face Manchester United: Karius, Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Henderson, Can, Coutinho, Firmino, Mane, Sturridge

Final warm ups are almost done, kick-off to follow in 10 minutes.

Anyone superstitious?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jose Mourinho has been explaining his decision to select Ashley Young, stressing the 31-year-old is comfortable with the responsibility of the game.

Every time he plays he does his job well. He didnt miss one training session since July, he is always fit. He works really well.

Manchester United have confirmed Anthony Martial and his France teammate Morgan Schneiderlin miss out tonight due to minor injuries picked up in training on Saturday.

While Liverpool have been dazzling at times this season, problems remain at the back. Since Klopps appointment, Liverpool have conceded 16 goals from corners and free kicks, the latest coming in their last Premier League outing at Swansea City. New personnel hasnt solved the issue. United meanwhile have been increasingly effective in such positions, with goals from Chris Smalling, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba in the win over Leicester last month all coming direct from corner kicks.

Klopp has said this week his side recognise that and have been working away to address that shortcomings.

I would imagine that if United start putting their tall players in the box they will be fighting for the result and for that to happen it must mean that something we did must have worked pretty well.

We know about Uniteds physical strength and we cannot do anything to change it, all we can do is try to avoid situations where they can use it.

But we have strengths of our own and first we must concentrate on what we do well.

So whats Mourinhos thinking in bringing Marouane Fellaini back into his side tonight?

A woeful performance in that Watford defeat from the Belgian prompted the United boss to hand Ander Herrera a chance in a more destructive midfield role. The Spaniard was excellent in the 4-1 win over Leicester City the following week and has relished his managers challenge to adapt his game in a deeper role.

But Fellaini does have one thing the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder doesnt have. The Belgians threat from set pieces has so often been his saving grace; it was after all his header that came off the cross bar allowing Wayne Rooney to score the winner at Anfield last season. And with Liverpools well-documented problems defending from set pieces, its a decision that makes sense.

Jurgen Klopp has also made two changes tonight to the side that beat Swansea City before the international break. Adam Lallana, who picked up a groin injury in that victory in south Wales misses out, as does Georginio Wijnaldum, who picked up a knock of his own while on international duty.

Emre Can comes in for his first start in the league this season, while Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both start despite travelling back from Brazil late last week. Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren also start having recovered from minor knocks.

Jose Mourinho has made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Stoke City prior to the international break. Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard both drop out with Marouane Fellaini returning to partner Paul Pogba in midfield. Ashley Young meanwhile starts his first game in the league for the club since the victory at Anfield last season.

Luke Shaw meanwhile has not played a game for club or country since the 3-1 defeat to Watford in mid-September. With that in mind, Daley Blind retains his starting spot at left-back. Wayne Rooney remains on the bench with Chris Smalling continuing as captain.

According to Frances SFR Sport, Anthony Martial is unavailable tonight due to a minor knee injury.

Manchester United team to face Liverpool: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Blind, Fellaini, Pogba, Rashford, Herrera, Young, Ibrahimovic

Subs: Romero, Rojo, Shaw, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Rooney

Liverpool team to face Manchester United: Karius, Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Henderson, Can, Coutinho, Firmino, Mane, Sturridge

Subs: Mignolet, Moreno, Klavan, Lucas, Grujic, Lallana, Origi

BREAKING: Georginio Wijnaldum misses out completely for Liverpool with Adam Lallana only fit enough for the bench.

BREAKING: Anthony Martial and Henikh Mkhitaryan both left out of Manchester United squad.

Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho meet in the Premier League for the second time; the first time as the managers of Englands two most successful clubs. Its the Liverpool boss who holds the advantage in their head-to-head record so far. Heres our recap of their previous scraps.

Unconfirmed rumours this evening suggest Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not be in the Manchester United squad tonight. The Armenia international started his first game for the club in another huge derby against Manchester City and was taken off after half-time. Having just returned form injury, will Mourinho decide to pull him out of the firing line?

Not only did he have Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan staying in Manchester during the international break to complete their recoveries, but Jose Mourinho was also able to welcome back every member of his squad without any fresh injury concerns.

I like my players to go to the international teams, Mourinho said. Im always very proud of my players to be selected. And especially these two that you refer to. One was a debutant, the other was a call-up to the Spanish team. Its obviously important for them and its good for me and I think also the club feels proud of it.

And on his returning Brazilians...

Roberto could do a bit more [than Coutinho] in the last [training] session. Phil played two games so needed more recovery after a long flight. Its a long trip, and its still in their legs, but each hour helps and playing on Monday is an advantage, of course.

Here is what Jurgen Klopp had to say on squad fitness last week.

In this moment we dont know exactly who is available. We all know about the issues obviously from Gini and Adam, but both not ruled out for Monday, I would say. But of course four sessions to go sounds long, but it is only four sessions. We have to see.

Team news: Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has just one member of his squad unavailable this evening – the perennially injured Phil Jones. United made a special request for the Armenia national team for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to remain in Manchester during the international break to complete his recovery from a thigh problem. It seems to have done the trick, with the former Borussia Dortmund star available for selection tonight.

Having not played since the 3-1 defeat to Watford for either club or country, Luke Shaw is also in line to return tonight.

Team news: Liverpool

Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum were Liverpools biggest doubts when Jurgen Klopp addressed the media last Friday. The Netherlands international limped off with a hamstring injury while representing his country in a World Cup 2018 qualifier against France last Tuesday.

Lallana, meanwhile, was not selected for international duty with England after picking up a groin injury in Liverpools victory over Swansea City. The Liverpool boss spoke positively of the two returning, however, refusing to rule either man out.

Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren were also casualties in that win over Swansea. The international break came at the right time for both of them, however, returning to training last week having seemingly overcome those respective knee and groin injuries.

Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho both returned from international duty without a scratch, but Klopp stopped short of confirming whether both would be available for tonights match, instead choosing to wait until the eleventh hour before making a decision.

Liverpool vs Manchester United. Its kind of a big deal.

The famous old fixture has a new twist to it this evening. Jose Mourinho is no stranger to a rampant Anfield crowd baying for his blood, but tonight is the first time he will walk out as Manchester United manager. Jurgen Klopp got his first taste of the fixture last season, falling to Louis van Gaals United last February.

His side are very much the team in form tonight, however, having won their last five games in all competition with a side operating with the cohesion and verve of a title challenger.

The two managers share a brief history, with Klopp holding the superior record having won three of their five meetings to date, with just one going to Mourinho. But another modern rivalry now has a platform to become one for the ages.
