Lenovo Enters Smartphone Market with Five Android SmatrphonesReuters

Lenovo Group Limited on Thursday entered the smartphone arena with the five new Android smartphones, namely Lenovo A60+, Lenovo S880, Lenovo P700i, Lenovo K860, and Lenovo S560.

After scoring success in the PC market the Chinese hardware company announced its foray in to the smartphone market in India with five smartphones priced between ₹6, 500 and ₹28, 500. The latest move stemmed from Lenovo's 4 screen strategies in which smartphone is considered a vital component. The company's four screens include PCs, tablets, smartphones and smart TVs.

"Having witnessed success in the PC space where we are currently No. 1 in India, our entry into the smartphones category is a strategic move that reinforces our commitment to lead technology and innovation across the 4 screens.  The number of consumers adopting smarter, wireless technology in the country is on the rise and we anticipate a huge increase in smartphone users," said Amar Babu, Managing Director, Lenovo India.

The PC maker's debut in the smartphone arena is presumed as a move to tackle the decline in the PC market as the sales of tablets and mobile phones are growing at fast pace. According to Gartner Inc, the global shipment rate of PC has gone down by 8.3 percent in the third quarter of this fiscal year against the figures of 2011. At the same time, the number of mobile phones and smartphones shipped in 2012 has increased.

Lenovo made it to second spot in the mobile phone market in its home country. The company expects to enlarge its mobile phone market with the launch of these smartphones.

"Lenovo has built a solid and successful mobile phone business in China reaching the number two position in the smartphone category in less than 18 months. We have reached a critical expansion point where we can use the solid platform we have established to expand to other countries and bring our leading technology to many more users," said JD Howard, Vice President, Lenovo MIDH as quoted by NDTV Gadget.
