Chennai/New Delhi, Sep 05 (ANI): Lawyers hailed the apex court orders to release undertrials who have served more than half of the maximum punishment they were charged with in jail. The Supreme Court on Friday ordered to free all such undertrials. The court directed all judicial officers to start visiting prisons from October 01 and file a report, within two months, on prisoners released by them. Meanwhile, former judge of Delhi High Court, Justice RS Sodhi, said the decision came after the intervention of executives in the matter. As per law, prisoners awaiting trial must be released once they have served half the maximum sentence they would receive if found guilty, but that law is rarely implemented.
