Ladakh has been declared India's first 100% organic Union Territory. Announcing the achievement, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena commended the contributions of farmers and the efforts of the Union Territory administration in promoting organic farming.

According to the administration, this achievement is the result of sustained efforts to promote chemical-free farming and preserve Ladakh's traditional agricultural practices. The initiative is expected to help protect the region's fragile Himalayan ecosystem, maintain soil and water quality, and increase farmers' incomes.

"A proud moment for Ladakh as it becomes India's first 100% organic union territory, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our farmers. This milestone reflects our commitment to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of chemical-free farming, environmental conservation, and sustainable livelihoods," Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said in a post on social media.

"Our strict prohibition on chemical fertilisers and continued efforts towards organic certification will protect Ladakh's fragile Himalayan ecosystem, improve soil and water health, and enhance the value of local produce," he said.

"This would further strengthen market linkages, improve farmers' incomes, and establish Ladakh as a model for sustainable high-altitude agriculture. My congratulations to all farmers and stakeholders on this historic achievement!" he added.

The Lieutenant Governor said Ladakh's farmers had set an example by promoting environmentally friendly farming despite challenging geographical conditions. He said achieving organic status was not merely an accomplishment but also an important step towards conserving natural resources and improving farmers' livelihoods.

Complete ban on chemical fertilisers

To promote organic farming in Ladakh, a complete ban on the purchase, distribution, sale, marketing, and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers was ordered in July 2026. The decision aims to maintain organic farming standards and protect soil and water resources from chemical pollution.

Earlier, in March 2026, the administration dispatched consignments of fertilisers for distribution in various villages to ensure that farmers had access to organic fertilisers before the sowing season.

The administration has also taken steps to provide farmers with the necessary support during the transition to organic farming.

Local products may find better markets.

The promotion of organic farming in Ladakh is expected to open up new markets for local products such as apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley, and vegetables.

Organic certification, improved storage and processing facilities, effective branding, and expanded marketing networks could help farmers secure better prices for their produce.

The Lieutenant Governor said ensuring that farmers benefited from Ladakh's organic status should be a priority for the administration. This would require improved market access, fair prices for agricultural produce, and a stronger marketing network for organic products.

He also emphasised the need to combine traditional agricultural knowledge with scientific techniques while conserving natural resources.

The initiative is expected to inspire other states and Union Territories to adopt sustainable agricultural practices suited to their local conditions.
