At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity Durga Puja pandal in central Kolkata on Saturday, October 17. Heavy rainfall, a swelling crowd, narrow entry and exit routes, and a microphone announcement warning of a possible structural collapse appear to have contributed to the tragedy.

The stampede occurred at around 7:30 pm on Saptami, the seventh day of Durga Puja, when thousands of devotees had gathered at the popular pandal. The sudden rush of people through a cramped bylane reportedly led to a crowd surge, with several visitors slipping and falling as others tried to move through the congested area.

The incident prompted an emergency response, with injured devotees rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The pandal was subsequently closed to visitors as authorities began investigating the circumstances that led to the deadly crush.

How Did the Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal Stampede Happen?

According to eyewitness accounts and initial reports, rain played a significant role in the chain of events leading to the stampede. A spell of rainfall left the streets slippery, prompting people to seek shelter around the pandal. The growing number of visitors added pressure to the narrow approach lanes and entry and exit gates.

A microphone announcement warning of a possible structural collapse reportedly triggered further panic and a rush among devotees. As people attempted to move through the congested space, some fell, while others were caught in the resulting crowd crush.

The exact sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the announcement are being examined. Initial reports have pointed to a combination of crowd pressure, restricted movement and inadequate crowd management as possible contributing factors.

19 Dead, 25 Injured; Police Detain Puja Organisers

The death toll from the stampede rose to 19, while 25 people were reported injured. Police detained several people, including members of the club that organised the puja, the private security agency and those responsible for crowd management.

The Chorbagan pandal was shut following the incident. Police also closed several other crowded Durga Puja venues as a precautionary measure and urged organisers to ensure adequate crowd-control arrangements.

Suvendu Adhikari Announces Probe, Compensation

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced an investigation into the incident and said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be formed under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court.

Adhikari also announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed in the stampede. Authorities said arrangements were being made to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

TMC, BJP Trade Allegations After Stampede

The tragedy triggered a political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The TMC alleged that poor crowd management and inadequate police presence contributed to the stampede. The party also questioned the arrangements at the pandal and accused the authorities of failing to ensure the safety of devotees.

Meanwhile, Adhikari said an announcement made by the puja organisers had triggered a rush among visitors. The proposed investigation is expected to examine the sequence of events, crowd-control arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the microphone announcement.
