One person was killed and two were injured in a suspected crude bomb blast on the premises of a ship repair factory in Cossipore area of Kolkata on Friday afternoon.

The trio were clearing the weed around the factory premises, when the suspected bomb went off at around 2.45 pm. All three were rushed to the nearby hospital, where one of them was declared dead.

The condition of the two injured is said to be critical. Cossipore, also spelt as Cossipur or Kashipur, is a neighbourhood in north Kolkata, which is known for its gun and shell factories that have been there since the British era.

NDTV quoted police as saying that they suspect the crude bomb might have been hidden in the undergrowth on the factory compound by local criminals and the unsuspecting victims might have triggered the explosion by accidentally hitting it with a spade.

The police at the scene said that they were finding it difficult to search the area and fear that there might be more bombs or explosives in the undergrowth, The New Indian Express reported.

The deceased was identifeid as 43-year-old Sanjib Das and the injured as Amrito Sarkar and Sagar Das, according to DNA.

Police and security officials have secured the blast site. Sniffer dogs along with a bomb squad have been deployed and are looking for more explosives around the factory premises, the police said.
