Four members of a family died after their car plummeted into a 200-foot deep quarry in Kochi's Thiruvankulam area at 11pm on Sunday.

The victims were identified as VV Biju (42), who was Kattapana Water Authority chief engineer, 35-year-old wife Sheeba, seven-year-old daughter Meenakshi and four-year-old son Surya.

The local residents, who found a floating tyre in the water-filled quarry pit early on Monday morning, had started a search for the victims before the police arrived, according to reports. The family was returning to Thodupuzha after weekend shopping in Kochi.

It is assumed that the car veered off the main road and broke the barricade, before falling into the abandoned quarry.
