India on Sunday commemorated the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several political leaders paying homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to mark India's victory in Operation Vijay, the military campaign that successfully evicted Pakistani intruders from strategic positions in the Kargil sector of Ladakh after more than two months of intense fighting. The day honours the courage, sacrifice and valour of the Indian Armed Forces.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, saying the bravery and supreme sacrifice of the Kargil heroes continue to inspire every Indian. He said the nation's gratitude towards the armed forces remains unwavering and reaffirmed India's commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty.
President Droupadi Murmu also remembered the soldiers who fought in the conflict, describing their courage and dedication as a lasting source of inspiration for the nation. She paid homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the country's territorial integrity.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the commemorative event at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, where he honoured the fallen soldiers and reiterated that India's armed forces remain fully prepared to defend the country's borders against any threat. He praised the courage and professionalism displayed by the armed forces during the conflict and said their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with several other political leaders across party lines, also paid tribute to the martyrs, remembering their unmatched courage and commitment to protecting the nation.
The Kargil War, fought between May and July 1999, ended with India regaining control of key mountain peaks occupied by Pakistani forces and infiltrators. More than 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the operation, which remains one of the defining moments in the country's military history.
Commemorative events were held across the country, with floral tributes, memorial ceremonies and messages of gratitude honouring the brave soldiers whose sacrifices ensured India's victory in the Kargil conflict.
