Filmmaker Karan Johar has finally addressed the buzz surrounding his recent Instagram activity after fans noticed that he had unfollowed several close friends and Bollywood celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Malaika Arora, Manish Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Kartik Aaryan.
At present, Karan Johar's Instagram account shows that he follows just 78 people
The unexpected social media move sparked widespread speculation online. Later, Karan took to Instagram on Thursday to address the chatter and explain the reason behind his unfollowing spree.
"It's a DIGITAL DETOX!!!! Am unfollowing everyone to reduce my time and energy spent on the gram!!!" Karan wrote on his Instagram Stories.
The move sparked widespread speculation on social media, with many wondering if there was a fallout between the filmmaker and some of the industry's biggest names. However, Karan has now dismissed such rumors, explaining that the decision was part of a personal "digital detox."
Taking to Instagram Stories, Karan wrote, "It's a DIGITAL DETOX!!!! Am unfollowing everyone to reduce my time and energy spent on the gram!!! This can't be national news for god's sake... please clickbait something else! This is irrelevant!"
Interestingly, while Karan removed most Bollywood celebrities from his following list, he continues to follow actress Priyanka Chopra. Apart from her, the filmmaker's current following list largely includes Dharma Productions CEO Apoorva Mehta and business partner Adar Poonawalla.
The filmmaker, who enjoys over 17 million followers on Instagram, is now following only a limited number of accounts. His social media presence remains highly active, with regular updates on his professional ventures, opinions on trending topics, and glimpses of his children, Roohi and Yash.
On the work front, Karan recently produced the romantic drama "Chand Mera Dil," starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya. Released on May 22, the film received mixed reviews at the box office. He is currently gearing up for his next production, "Naagzilla," which stars Kartik Aaryan in the lead role.
With his clarification, Karan has put an end to speculation, emphasizing that the unfollowing spree was simply an effort to reduce time spent on social media rather than a reflection of personal or professional differences.
