Even as multiple news sources have confirmed that singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has been hospitalised after being found unconscious in her home, fans still are confused and think it might be an elaborate April Fools' day joke.

Many found it suspicious that it was through a statement on Mitchell's official website that it was announced that the 71-year-old was undergoing tests at the LA hospital on 1 April but was "awake and in good spirits."

The hospitalisation of the Canadian-born was first reported by TMZ, which said that paramedics were called to Mitchell's home Tuesday afternoon. The statement on Mitchell's website said that she regained consciousness during the ambulance ride to the hospital.

Even though Los Angeles fire officials confirmed to Associated Press that paramedics did answer an afternoon 911 call in Bel Air, the area where Mitchell lives, they could not verify her identity.

Canadian-born Mitchell became a folk music icon of the late 1960s and early 1970s with songs like "Big Yellow Taxi", "Both Sides, Now", and "Woodstock".

Variety reported that Mitchell is a lifelong smoker, who was once quoted as saying "six decades of smoking have robbed me of my voice."

Dozens of worried Mitchell fans have now taken to Twitter to debate on if it is an April fools' day prank or if she is really ill.

Look, I know it is April 1 and Morgellons is a non-existent disease. But I don't think @BBCNewsUS would joke about Joni Mitchell's health.
