J&K Set for Showdown Between Ruling NC and Opposition BJP on Wednesday

As Jammu and Kashmir braces for a high-voltage political showdown on Wednesday, the ruling National Conference (NC) and the principal opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are preparing to take their rivalry to the streets with simultaneous demonstrations and counter-demonstrations. Amid the escalating political confrontation, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma challenged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to resign as MLA from Ganderbal and seek a fresh mandate from the people on the issue of statehood.

"About a month ago, the BJP had announced that it would gherao the Civil Secretariat on September 2 over issues confronting the masses, particularly the outsourcing of more than 25,000 jobs in Jammu and Kashmir. Unfortunately, the ruling National Conference today announced a counter-gherao on Wednesday over the issue of statehood," Sharma told reporters in Srinagar.

"Statehood was never an issue for the ruling National Conference. The counter-gherao has been announced only to divert attention from issues concerning the unemployed youth of Jammu and Kashmir," Sharma alleged. He challenged Omar Abdullah to resign as MLA from Ganderbal and contest an election seeking a mandate specifically on the issue of statehood.

"The National Conference had contested the elections on the plank of restoring Articles 370 and 35A. The party had also promised one lakh jobs, 10 kilograms of free ration, 200 units of free electricity and 12 cylinders," he recalled, adding, "Instead of fulfilling these promises, the ruling party is now raking up the issue of statehood to hoodwink the people."

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness a political showdown on Wednesday, with the ruling National Conference and the principal opposition BJP announcing demonstrations and counter-demonstrations on September 2.

While the opposition BJP has announced a gherao of the Civil Secretariat to protest what it described as the Omar Abdullah government's failure on various fronts, the ruling National Conference has announced demonstrations outside BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu on the same day to protest the delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The National Conference on Tuesday announced that it would hold peaceful demonstrations outside BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu on Wednesday, demanding accountability from the union government over commitments made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court of India.

In a statement posted on its official social media handle, the NC said its proposed demonstrations would focus on what it described as key pending issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.

The party said its demands included constitutional guarantees, restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, clearance of the reservation file and justice for the people of the Union Territory.

"The mandate of the people of Jammu & Kashmir is not a blank cheque. It must be respected, not taken for granted," the party said.

The NC said the protests would be held peacefully and called for accountability over commitments made by the union government in Parliament and before the Supreme Court.

The announcement comes amid the NC's continued demand for the restoration of statehood and safeguards for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, the BJP had announced a major protest against the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir government over what it described as the administration's failure to fulfil its electoral commitments, including its promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to eligible households.

The BJP has announced a Secretariat gherao on September 2, with the protest march scheduled to begin from Lal Chowk and proceed towards the Civil Secretariat.

The party has opposed the 6.83 per cent increase in electricity tariffs, accusing the government of imposing an additional financial burden on the common people. The revised tariff is scheduled to come into effect from September 1, 2026.

BJP leaders have also questioned the Omar Abdullah government over its electoral promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to eligible households. The BJP has termed the tariff hike anti-people and demanded its immediate rollback.

According to BJP leaders, the proposed protest will also raise issues including alleged backdoor appointments, corruption and administrative misgovernance. The party has claimed that thousands of people, including party workers and representatives of various sections of society, are expected to participate in the Secretariat gherao.
