Krishna Janmashtami, the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, will be observed on Friday, September 4, 2026. However, devotees may see September 5 mentioned in calendars because the most important midnight worship, known as Nishita Kaal Puja, will take place after midnight and continue into the early hours of September 5.

The festival is celebrated with fasting, devotional singing, temple visits and midnight prayers. Among the most prominent celebrations are held in Mathura and Vrindavan, considered closely associated with Lord Krishna's life. Mumbai also witnesses large-scale Janmashtami celebrations, particularly through Dahi Handi events.

Janmashtami 2026: September 4 or 5?

According to Panchang calculations, Janmashtami will be celebrated on September 4, 2026. The Ashtami Tithi begins in the early hours of September 4 and ends around midnight.

The confusion over September 5 is primarily because Lord Krishna's birth is traditionally celebrated at midnight. Therefore, devotees will perform the main birth ceremony during the night of September 4 and into the early hours of September 5.

Janmashtami 2026 Nishita Puja Time

The Nishita period is considered the most auspicious time for worshipping Lord Krishna on Janmashtami.

For Mumbai, the Nishita Puja Muhurat is approximately 12:14 am to 1:01 am on September 5, with the midnight moment falling around 12:37 am.

In Mathura, the Nishita Puja Muhurat is approximately 11:56 pm on September 4 to 12:41 am on September 5.

Devotees traditionally perform the special Krishna Janmotsav puja during this period, followed by an aarti and offering of bhog.

Janmashtami 2026 Vrat

Many devotees observe a nirjala or phalahari vrat on Janmashtami. Some devotees completely abstain from food and water, while others consume fruits, milk and permitted fasting foods.

Those observing the fast generally avoid:

  • Grains and cereals
  • Regular salt
  • Meat and eggs
  • Onion and garlic
  • Alcohol and other non-vegetarian foods

The exact fasting rules differ according to family tradition and religious practice. Devotees should follow the vrat tradition they normally observe.

Janmashtami 2026 Puja Vidhi

Devotees can perform the Janmashtami puja by following these steps:

  1. Take a bath and clean the puja area before beginning the worship.
  2. Take a sankalp to observe the Janmashtami vrat and puja.
  3. Place an idol or image of Bal Gopal or Lord Krishna on a decorated platform.
  4. At midnight, perform the abhishek of the idol using Panchamrit, traditionally made with milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar.
  5. Bathe the idol with clean water and gently wipe it.
  6. Dress Krishna in new clothes and decorate him with jewellery, flowers and a crown.
  7. Offer tulsi leaves, fruits, sweets and other bhog to Lord Krishna.
  8. Light a diya and incense and perform Krishna aarti.
  9. Ring bells and celebrate Krishna's birth with devotional songs and prayers.
  10. Place Bal Gopal in a decorated jhula (cradle) and gently swing the cradle as part of the Janmotsav celebration.

After the midnight puja, devotees may distribute prasad and continue with devotional celebrations.

Janmashtami celebrations in Vrindavan

Vrindavan is expected to witness elaborate celebrations on September 4. Temples associated with Krishna will hold special prayers, decorations and religious programmes.

The Banke Bihari Temple has listed September 4 as Janmashtami, while Nandotsav will follow on September 5. The midnight birth celebration is among the major highlights of the festival.

Devotees visiting Vrindavan should also expect large crowds around the major temples and pilgrimage areas.

Janmashtami celebrations in Mumbai

Mumbai also celebrates Krishna Janmashtami with temple programmes, midnight pujas and Dahi Handi events.

Temples and Krishna devotees organise special bhajans, kirtans, abhisheks and cultural programmes. Dahi Handi, in which groups form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd or other offerings, is one of the most popular public celebrations associated with Krishna Janmashtami in Maharashtra.

While Janmashtami is observed on September 4, many celebrations will continue into September 5 because the traditional Krishna Janmotsav takes place around midnight.
