In yet another murder of a panchayat member in Jammu and Kashmir, suspected militants shot dead a Sopore sarpanch at Bomai on Saturday.

Ghulam Mohammad Bhat was fired upon at point blank range by two assailants on a bike, reports NDTV.

Bhat is the fourth sarpanch to have been gunned down in the last month.

Just last week, Ghulam Mohammad Mir – another sarpanch from Sopore - was kidnapped and later killed.

The state is witnessing polling for the fifth phase of the assembly elections today.
