Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joined mourners at a Muharram ceremony and invoked the legacy of Imam Hussein, calling on people to stand firmly against oppression and injustice.

In a message shared on the occasion of Muharram, the Iranian President said the sacrifice of Imam Hussein serves as a timeless lesson in resisting tyranny and remaining committed to truth and justice.

"One can give one's life, but not one's freedom; one can stand alone, but not abandon the truth. We must neither commit injustice, nor accept it, nor remain silent in its face," Pezeshkian said in a post on X.

The President also participated in a mourning ceremony attended by devotees commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Videos shared by Iranian media showed Pezeshkian joining mourners during the religious observance.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds deep significance for Shia Muslims, with Ashura marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. His sacrifice is widely regarded as a symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice.

This year's Muharram commemorations have taken place amid heightened regional tensions, with large mourning gatherings held across Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. Religious processions, sermons and chest-beating rituals were organised as millions of devotees paid tribute to Imam Hussein and reflected on the values of sacrifice, justice and steadfastness in the face of oppression.
