The time of year — September — when Apple usually releases its flagship smartphone is here. The Cupertini giant is reportedly set to release its much-awaited devices, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, perhaps a few days from now. It will take on Samsung's recently-released Galaxy Note 7 in the market when launched, and a clash is inevitable.

Apple is yet to announce the release date of the iPhone 7 but reports have claimed that it will be unveiled on Sept. 7 at an event in San Francisco, before it is put up for pre-orders two days later and eventually released on Sept. 16. Reports also say that the device will be up for pre-orders on Sept. 9 and will hit the stores on Sept. 23.

Apple is releasing two variants of iPhone — the iPhone 7 with a 4.7-inch screen and iPhone 7 Plus with with a 5.5-inch screen and dual cameras. The variants are expected to share other specifications, including a lightning jack, an A10 chip, an iOS 10 operating system, a 3GB RAM, and camera with OIS (optical image stabilisation).

Will Apple fans be happy with what they have heard of the iPhone 7 so far? Probably not, because the company seriously needs to bring something unique to its flagship and give consumers a compelling reason to purchase it. With the company keeping mum, it is to be seen if the upcoming device will live up to the expectations of the people.

Going by the reports so far, it appears that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be far from competing with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in terms of features and specifications. Samsung's new device has an iris scanner, boasts 518 ppi pixel density, good support for virtual reality (VR) gears, and waterproof feature. But Apple's upcoming device will not come with an iris scanner and will perhaps be sans waterproofing too.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 sports a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1,440x2,560 pixels (518 ppi pixel density), powered by an Exynos 8890 processor, and runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system. It also has a 64GB internal memory expandable up to 256GB via microSD card, a 4GB RAM, a 12MP main camera with f/1.7 aperture, 26mm lens, phase detection autofocus, OIS, LED flash, 1/2.5" sensor size and 1.4 µm pixel size, a 5MP front-snapper with f/1.7 aperture and 22mm lens, and a 3,500mAh battery.
