IndiGo has revised its fuel charges for domestic and international flights following a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, making air travel more expensive for passengers. The revised charges apply to bookings made from April 2, 2026.
For domestic flights, the airline has introduced a distance-based fuel charge ranging from ₹275 to ₹950 per sector. Passengers travelling on shorter routes will pay a lower surcharge, while flights covering more than 2,000 km will attract the highest domestic charge of ₹950.
How much will domestic IndiGo flights costlier?
Under the revised structure, the fuel charge for domestic flights is:
- 0–500 km: ₹275
- 501–1,000 km: ₹400
- 1,001–1,500 km: ₹600
- 1,501–2,000 km: ₹800
- Above 2,000 km: ₹950 per sector
The revised system replaces the earlier flat domestic fuel charge, with the airline linking the surcharge to the distance travelled.
International flights see a bigger increase
The impact is significantly higher on several international routes. The revised fuel surcharge ranges from ₹900 to ₹10,000, depending on the destination. Flights to the UK and Europe, excluding Greece and Turkey, attract the highest surcharge of ₹10,000 per sector.
For other international destinations, the additional charge varies depending on the region, with routes to the Gulf and Middle East, Southeast Asia, China and Africa seeing different levels of surcharge.
Why has IndiGo increased the charges?
The hike comes amid a sharp rise in global fuel prices and ATF costs. Fuel is one of the biggest expenses for airlines and accounts for a substantial portion of their operating costs. IndiGo said the revised charges reflect the increased cost of fuel for its operations.
The airline had already introduced fuel charges in March as fuel prices surged amid the West Asia conflict. The latest revision changes the domestic structure to a distance-based system while increasing charges on several international routes.
For passengers planning to travel with IndiGo, the revised fuel charges will be added to the ticket price, meaning the final amount payable at the time of booking will be higher than the base fare.
