An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Mumbai was forced to undertake multiple holding loops over Mumbai before being diverted to Hyderabad after heavy rainfall and poor visibility disrupted flight operations on July 5.

According to data from Flightradar24, IndiGo flight 6E-675 circled above Mumbai several times as it was unable to land due to adverse weather conditions. The aircraft eventually diverted to Hyderabad after remaining in a holding pattern for an extended period.

The flight departed Delhi at 8:30 am and was scheduled to land in Mumbai at 11 am. However, as torrential rain lashed the city, the aircraft continued to circle over Mumbai before finally landing in Hyderabad at 11:49 am.

According to sources, more than 365 flights experienced significant delays due to the adverse weather. Flightradar24 data showed that nearly 89% of departures and 84% of arrivals were delayed, with average departure delays stretching to 72 minutes.

At least 17 domestic and international flights were cancelled as heavy monsoon showers and poor visibility severely disrupted operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The heavy rainfall also affected all major modes of transport across Mumbai, including flights, suburban trains and buses, after the city received more than 1,000 mm of rainfall over the past few days.

Despite the disruptions and flight diversions, airport operations remained largely stable, with airlines and air traffic controllers managing arrivals and departures around intermittent spells of heavy rain and reduced visibility, sources said.

Airlines have advised passengers to check the latest flight status before travelling, as schedules may continue to change depending on weather conditions over Mumbai.

According to Air Traffic Control (ATC) sources, Mumbai airport handles between 980 and 1,000 flights daily, with an average of 48 air traffic movements every hour, including 24 arrivals and 24 departures.
