
Hyundai Motor, South Korea's largest carmaker, announced a 14 percent decline in its global sales for August compared to the previous year, affected by partial strikes and fewer working days.
The company sold 288,574 vehicles last month, down from 336,141 units in August of the prior year.
Domestic sales suffered a steep drop of 41 percent to 34,333 units, while overseas sales fell 8.5 percent to 254,241 vehicles.
To counteract the sales downturn, Hyundai plans to promote new models such as the New Grandeur sedan and the all-new Avante compact, aiming to regain market share through the remainder of the year.
From January to August, Hyundai's cumulative sales decreased 6 percent to 2,575,360 units from 2,738,615 compared to the same period last year.
Domestic sales over those eight months declined 15 percent to 399,159 units, with overseas sales down 4.1 percent to 2,176,201 units.
Conversely, Kia experienced a 5 percent increase in global sales in August, propelled by strong demand for its sport utility vehicles.
Kia sold 296,675 vehicles worldwide last month, with the Sportage model leading sales at 46,239 units, followed by the Seltos with 35,689 units.
Its overseas sales rose 7.4 percent year-on-year to 225,413 units in August, although domestic sales declined 7.6 percent to 40,213 units.
Renault Korea Motors, the South Korean branch of France's Renault S.A., reported a sharp 34 percent drop in sales last month due to weak demand both domestically and internationally.
The company sold 4,261 vehicles in August, down from 6,457 units a year earlier. Domestic sales plunged 47.7 percent to 2,024 units, and overseas sales decreased 13.6 percent to 2,237 units.
Hybrid models accounted for 79 percent of Renault Korea's domestic sales from January to August, with 19,630 units sold during that period.
Meanwhile, KG Mobility's sales fell 23 percent in August from the prior year, primarily due to weaker demand in the domestic market.
KG Mobility sold 6,800 vehicles last month, compared to 8,830 units in August of the previous year. Domestic sales dropped 43 percent to 2,300 units, while exports declined 5.1 percent to 4,560 units.
