Guide to clean install macOS 10.13 High Sierra via bootable USB driveApple

Apple has just rolled out the first public beta of macOS 10.13 High Sierra, following the announcement of iOS 11 developer preview at the WWDC 2017 keynote event in San Jose, California. It must be noted that the new macOS 10.13 update is available for developers and public beta testers only, and hence there are no manual download links available.

Prospective users of macOS High Sierra are advised to sign up for the public beta membership, if they do not have access to developer beta subscription or a registered Apple developer account. Once you have grabbed a copy of macOS High Sierra from the Apple servers, you are all set to install the same, using an USB installer as outlined in the step-by-step guide posted below.

Steps to create a USB installer for macOS 10.13 High Sierra

  • Download and copy the macOS High Sierra beta installer to the /Applications folder on your computer. Note: Do not change the default file name 'Install macOS 10.13 Beta' of the installer.
  • Connect an 8GB USB pen drive to your computer and format it as GUID Partition Map and MacOS Extended (Journaled) using the Disk Utility app.
  • Give a meaningful filename for your USB drive. By default, you can name it as 'USB'.
  • Launch the Terminal window and copy/paste the following command to transfer the Beta Installer files to the USB and make it bootable:

sudo /Applications/Install macOS 10.13 Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS 10.13 Beta.app --nointeraction

  • When prompted, enter your account password and the installation process should begin. Note: The USB drive may temporarily disappear from the Desktop as it gets unmounted while preparing the bootable volume.
  • Wait until all the files have been copied to the USB drive to make it bootable. Once the bootable USB is created, you should see the drive reappearing on the Desktop.

Steps to clean install macOS High Sierra using USB installer

  • With the USB drive connected to your Mac, just reboot the computer while holding the Option or Alt key.
  • Now select the USB drive named 'Install macOS 10.13 Beta' to boot through it.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation setup for macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
