The 96 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy were remembered at Liverpools Europa League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Thursday (14 April), a day ahead of the 27th anniversary of the disaster. A minutes silence was observed and fans from both teams joined in a rendition of Liverpool anthem Youll Never Walk Alone.
A final Hillsborough memorial was held on Friday (15 April). The annual memorial has been held at the football ground since 1989, but relatives of the victims and the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) unanimously agreed that this years service will be the last.
A minutes silence was held across Liverpool at 3.06pm, the exact time when the FA Cup semi-final was abandoned following a terrace crush. The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Town Hall bells tolled 96 times, while flags at civic buildings were flown at half-mast.
