Halo 5 Guardians, the FPS video game from 343 Industries and publishers Microsoft Studios, is expected to be released on Tuesday, 27 October. The game is exclusive to Xbox One.

Josh Holmes of 343 Industries was happy to note via official post on the Halowaypoint that Halo 5: Guardians is finally dropping down after three years of development.

"I am so proud of the work our team has done and of the game we've built together... Everyone here cares so deeply about making a great game for you, the fans," he said.

He noted that Halo 5: Guardians is a "big milestone" for the dev team and the Halo community since it, "represents the beginning of our next journey together. We look forward to supporting the game with the introduction of new content and experiences for many months to come," he added.

Master Chief is playable only in 3 of the 15 missions

To the disappointment of several fans, it is being reported that Master Chief is playable only in three missions out of the 15 missions provided in Halo 5: Guardians. Master Chief has been the main character in most of the Halo games.

Halo 5 has Spartan Locke taking the lead role, this is despite the fact that Frank O'Connor, developer at 343 Industries had previously confirmed the Master Chief is the main character and Agent Locke as the "primary character," according to Reddit thread (via Attack of the Fanboy).

Spartan Locke, on the other hand, will be playable in other 12 missions.

Below are the missions that feature Spartan Locke:

  • Osiris – Fireteam Osiris
  • Blue Team – Blue Team
  • Glassed – Fireteam Osiris
  • Meridian Station – Fireteam Osiris
  • Unconfirmed – Fireteam Osiris
  • Evacuation – Fireteam Osiris
  • Reunion – Blue Team
  • Swords of Sanghelios – Fireteam Osiris
  • Alliance – Fireteam Osiris
  • Enemy Lines – Fireteam Osiris
  • Before the Storm – Fireteam Osiris
  • Battle of Sunaion – Fireteam Osiris
  • Genesis – Fireteam Osiris
  • The Breaking – Blue Team
  • Guardians – Fireteam Osiris

Here is what Aggie Michael, a forum member at Halowaypoint, had to say:

In the campaign there are 15 missions and the master chief is only playable in 3 of them! What's going on with 343? The Halo 4 movie was based entirely on Jameson Locke, the Halo Xbox One Limited Bundle featured Locke's artwork and controller and now Halo 5 is almost entirely Jameson Locke?

Perhaps 343 does not understand that the Master Chief made the game (Bungie realized that and all of their Halo games were rated in the 90s while 343's games were in the 80s in ratings). Bring the Master Chief back as the star! If you want to alternate between Master Chief and Locke every year like EA does (modern warfare and black ops) that is fine but don't kill off the the character who made the game. Someone needs the right the ship at 343 and make Halo (Master Chief) games! Or did the Halo (Master Chief) series really die when Bungie left?

The comments that ran on the thread included some players who were "totally fine" with it to others who were happy that "there was still Halo".

Some forum members were supportive of 343's decision to not give Master Chief more space and some even predict the next Halo 6 could very well have Master Chief leading it.

Here is what another forum member RobeMan1990 had to say:

Also nobody said Chief isn't very important to 343. But you do fail to realize this is a new trilogy. Chief may have less time now but didn't 343 make a full chief game (4)

Chief isn't going anywhere in the long run. Locke got his time and will come back but his story is more important NOW

Also don't say locke is boring. Chief didn't do much amazing things in CE he was still a fairly silent protganist. Even if he is or was better in his start don't forget you have 10x more chief love.

But if you think this is chiefs end or that locke is taking over 100% you're stupid. Sorry but its a video game. Enjoy it. And stop being paranoid.
