Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that the secret government files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be declassified from 23 January, 2016 -- his 119th birth anniversary.

The move comes following a long-standing demand by the freedom fighter's relatives, who met Modi on Wednesday evening at his residence in the national capital, 7 Race Course Road.

"It was a privilege to welcome family members of Subhas Babu to 7RCR. We had a remarkable & extensive interaction," Modi tweeted after the interaction.

The prime minister said that the demands of Netaji's family members are similar to his own thinking as well as the the view of his government.

"There is no need to strangle history. Nations that forget their history lack the power to create it. Process of declassification of files relating to Netaji will begin on 23rd January 2016, Subhas Babu's birth anniversary."

Modi added that he will request governments of other nations to declassify Netaji files. He is expected to take up the issue during meetings with foreign leader, starting with Russia in December.
