Google's Gmail service reportedly shut down this afternoon at around 1:00 PM, causing incovenience to its users. Google Play, the app store for Android, too was affected.

It is the second time in less than a month that Google's gmail server faced outage in India. The company's app store, Google Play, too did not respond on Wednesday afternoon.

The message on the Gmail page flashed, "502. That's an error. The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds. That's all we know."

The "502 error" is usually displayed inside the Internet browser window when one server received an invalid response from another server it was accessing while attempting to load the web page or fill another request by the browser.

Gmail users cracked jokes on the outage in the social networking site Twitter:

@CHemant10: Need to access my emails urgently, and Gmail seems down. Is any NSA PRISM agent online who can fetch my emails and DM me? #nsacalledtotellme

@kushalsanghvi: #Gmail having problems again...guess its abt too many users!!

@iVivekHr: Gmail was down and I missed an urgent mail where I had won 10 Lacs $ in a lottery

Approximately around 1.15 pm the services were noticed to be working again. Many users reported back that Gmail was working.

Online outages by users against the free email service happened earlier this month on 13 May.
