Legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh suffered a brain hemorrhage and underwent a life-saving surgery at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Friday evening.

According to hospital authorities, the 70-year-old singer is still critical and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. "All I can say is that his condition is still critical and he is under observation," said cardiologist Ajit Menon.

Family members refused to give details about the operation, but a close family friend said that the singer had been operated upon to remove a blood clot in his brain.

Singh was to perform a concert with famous Pakistani singer Gulam Ali in Mumbai.

He has sung several songs for Hindi films and composed more than 70 famous ghazals.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003 and Padmashree in 2006
