Ford India's Chennai plant produced its millionth vehicle and engine recently, adding yet another milestone in the history of the company.

Beginning operations in 1999, Ford's Chennai facility manufactures EcoSport, Fiesta and Endeavour. The millionth vehicle to roll off the Chennai assembly line was the company's popular EcoSport. The facility, with an investment of $1 billion, also houses an engine assembly plant that started commercial operations in 2008.

The Chennai unit has an installed capacity to assemble up to 2 lakh vehicles and 3.4 lakh engines a year. Ford's Chennai plant also exports to more than 40 markets around the world, including some ASEAN countries, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, besides meeting the demand in the domestic market.

"Chennai is from where we started our Make in India journey. Apart from being a global manufacturing hub for Ford, the facility has set new benchmarks in adopting processes that not only ensure global quality but also significantly reduce our carbon footprint," said Balasundaram Radhakrishnan, Executive Director - Manufacturing, Ford Chennai Vehicle Assembly & Engine Plant.
