Thousands of US fans celebrated their teams victory over Japan in the Womens World Cup.

Team USA scored four goals in the first 16 minutes – including a jaw-dropping shot from midfield by captain Carli Lloyd – and went on to thrash Japan 5-2 in the final in Vancouver yesterday (5 July).

Its exciting, it was a really, really good game. They did what they were supposed to do and its a very happy time, US fan Brigitte said after the match.

With each goal fans watching giant video screens just outside Washington DC erupted and began chants of U-S-A, U-S-A.

Im proud to be an American, you know so very happy, it was a joyous moment for all the soccer fans united, fan Fernando Bilbao told reporters after the chanting had died down.

And there was no doubt what the highlight of the game was for many.

Carli Lloyd when she lobbed it past the Japanese goalkeeper, caught her off-guard, that was definitely the best one of the game, added Bilbao.

The win secured a third World Cup for the United States and the first since 1991.
