Fact check: Has Anurag Kashyap been named in the Epstein Files? Truth behind the 'Bollywood guy' referenceinstagram

The release of the Epstein Files has triggered widespread uproar on social media, sending shockwaves through political, bureaucratic and celebrity circles. As photographs and documents continue to surface and circulate extensively on platforms such as Reddit, the massive cache linked to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has fuelled intense online debate.

According to a Moneycontrol report, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is referenced in email exchanges within the Epstein Files as the Bollywood guy. These emails involve Epstein and his associatesGiuseppe Bersani, Gino Yu and Ornella Corazza, and reportedly discuss Epstein's planned travel to Cuba and other destinations. Kashyap's name appears among individuals expected to attend workshops centred on Buddhism, technology and medicine.

Has Anurag Kashyap been named in the Epstein Files?

Following the Department of Justice's release of over three million documents on January 30, Anurag Kashyap's mention sparked a wave of reactions online, leaving the internet divided. The emails refer to him as the Bollywood guy and list him alongside other invitees to the proposed gatherings.

However, there is no official confirmation that Jeffrey Epstein and Anurag Kashyap were ever present at the same location at the same time. Anurag Kashyap's name does not appear in verified Epstein court documents, flight logs or unsealed testimonies available in the public record. There is also no allegation, legal filing or credible investigative report linking him to Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell or their criminal activities.

Legal experts and reports stress that the appearance of Anurag Kashyap's name in email correspondence does not establish that he attended any event or had any involvement with Epstein. The emails merely place him among several other public figures, namely Ben Goertzel, Bruce Damer and DJ Spooky, described as cool people invited to gatherings in locations like Shanghai, with no evidence of wrongdoing.

As new names crop up every other day,  netizens continue to react to the presence of high-profile names such as Deepak Chopra, Anil Ambani and even the Dalai Lama in the documents. Social media users have urged caution, distinguishing between individuals allegedly involved in Epstein's crimes and those who were merely mentioned or invited.

Some users mocked the sheer scale of the disclosures, likening the files to a Google search where everyone's name shows up.

Nandita Das's name in the Epstein Files

Actor Nandita Das has also been mentioned in the Epstein Files. A 2015 quarterly newsletter by Jem Bendell invited Epstein to the Lake District Festival, organised at Brathay Hall in the UK, and listed Das as one of the speakers. The event reportedly included music, kayaking, nature walks, yoga, tai chi, dance lessons and storytelling workshops.

Experts emphasise that being named in the Epstein Files does not imply guilt or illegal conduct. The documents comprise court filings, depositions, flight logs, contact books and unsealed records linked to legal proceedings involving Epstein and Maxwell. Many names appear in purely social or professional contexts, and individuals listed were not necessarily accused, investigated or charged with any crime. Context, legal experts stress, is crucial.
