Maharashtra has some of the best engineering colleges in the country, with Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai at the fore. However, the state also has a few colleges that have been labelled 'fake' by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

There are 277 educational institutions that are not recognised by any regulatory authority in India - information that was highlighted during the recent Lok Sabha session on Monday. Maharashtra has 11 such colleges offering engineering and technical courses that are not recognised by the concerned authorities in the government.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has been directed to look into the matter and take the responsible college managements to the task.

According to the chairman of AICTE, the certification and degrees offered by these institutions are void since they are not recognised by any regulatory authority in the country.
