The nominations for this year's Emmy Awards have been declared and while the Emmys have got most things right, with deserving nominations for shows like "Mr Robot" and "The Americans," many shows that were expected to be nominated have been left out of the nominations, much to the disappointment of fans.

As we wait for the ceremony on Sept. 18, when the winners will be declared, we highlight some of the most unexpected twists in this year's Emmy nominations.

Christian Slater of "Mr Robot" and "Mozart in the Jungle"

Slater and the series "Mozart in the Jungle" were among the big winners at the Golden Globe. Though the criteria for the Golden Globe are a little bit different than that of the Emmys, Slater's omission for an Emmy came as nothing less than a surprise.

"Mozart in the Jungle" had grabbed two Golden Globes this year but somehow didn't manage to get even a single nomination in the Emmys.

"Orange is the New Black"

Netflix sent one of its most-watched original series, "Orange is the New Black" under the comedy category this year. Unfortunately, the show, which has received critical acclaim, has only been nominated in the category of Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series.

Netflix's share of nominations doubles this year

This year has been a good one for the online streaming network Netflix as it bagged 54 Emmy nominations, as compared to the 24 that it managed in 2015. Most of the credit goes to its original series, which were well received by the viewers.

"Mr Robot" and "The Americans" – The well deserving contenders

Both the series got nominated for Outstanding Drama series at the Emmys, and that didn't come as a big surprise. There is a significant possibility that retirement of the period-drama series, "Mad Men" catapulted these two to bag the nominations.

Keri Russell over Julianna Margulies?

Julianna Margulies has played the role of Alicia Florrick in the legal drama series, "The Good Wife" for which she has won a Golden Globe, a Television Critics Association Award, and two additional Emmy Awards as lead actress.

However, she didn't get nominated this year at the Emmys. Though Keri Russell's portrayal of Elizabeth Jennings in "The Americans" is no less brilliant, shutting out Margulies was disappointing indeed.
