According to the synopsis of the episode by TV.com, "Season 4 ends with Holmes and Watson facing reprisal from the perpetrator who wants Morland dead, and realising they dangerously underestimated the scope of their new enemy's influence."

In the previous episode titled "The Invisible Hand," as Holmes was reviewing known evidence, which led him to the conclusion that instead of Mycroft (Rhys Ifans), someone else was wielding the sceptre in the organisation. Soon after, Morland's office was bombed by the Russian hit-man.

This led Holmes to a mysterious professor, Vikner (Tony Curran), connected to a number of Morland's business dealings. He was clearly expecting them. Not only was he the caretaker of Moriarty's organisation, he was also the father to her daughter.

New evidence on the hit-man surfaced, after which an angry Morland appeared at the Brownstone trying unsuccessfully to coerce Holmes into giving up the name of the caretaker. Then the Russian hit-man was arrested, but he told nothing useful.

Holmes eyed his belt and noticed corrosion and a distinct smell suggesting a type of propellant used at the bombing. This pointed the team to a theft of a barrel of pesticide upstate and a missing person, who was presumed dead.

Meanwhile, Vikner summoned Holmes to gauge his interest in a possible truce with Morland. As the team prepared an interview with the DA, the prisoner was assassinated in a murder-suicide by a rookie cop who turned out to be one of the psychopaths flagged in the survey from the episode before this.

As Holmes and Watson returned through the backdoor, they came face to face with a bomb identical to the first one.
