Maruti Suzuki reported a fall of 2.6 per cent in car sales at 113,606 vehicles in January 2016, down from 116,606 units sold in the corresponding month last year.

Exports declined sharply by 34.6 per cent to 7,223 cars in January 2016, down from 11,047 units in January 2015.

The largest Indian car maker's domestic car sales stood at 1,06,383 units, as against 1,05,559 units sold in January 2015, according to a press statement issued by the company on Monday.

The company attributed the tepid growth in domestic sales to "lesser number of working days in January 2016" that "impacted overall production and dispatch".

Ashok Leyland reports robust growth

Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland sold 13,886 vehicles in January 2016, up 30 per cent from 10,643 units sold in January, 2015, according to the company's regulatory filing with the BSE.

Royal Enfield sales up

Eicher Motors said that sales of two-wheeler Royal Enfield grew by 65 per cent during January 2016. The company sold 47,710 units of Royal Enfield during the month, up from 28,927 units sold in January 2015. However, exports declined 26 per cent to 570 units, the company informed the stock exchanges on Monday.

Hyundai Motor India sales decline  

Korean car maker Hyundai's India arm sold 44,230 cars in January 2016, 1.23 per cent less than 44,783 units sold in January 2015. Exports fell by 37.8 per cent to 6,214 units as against 10,003 units.

The company's domestic car sales stood at 38,016 cars, up 9.3 per cent from 34,780 units sold in January 2015, moneycontrol said, quoting a company statement.

Mahindra reports PV sales increase 

Utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra sold 22,088 passenger vehicles in January 2016, 13 per cent more than 19,573 units sold in January 2015, the company said in a statement. 

Rennault India posts 151% growth

Renault India said its January domestic car sales grew 151% to 8,031 units in January 2016, up from 3,203 units in the corresponding month last year, according to a company statement.

The spurt is reportedly due to a spike in sales of Renault Kwid. The company said orders for the car have crossed the 90,000 mark, prompting it to expand production capacity at its Chennai plant to ramp up production.

Tata Motors domestic car sales fall, CV sales rise 

Tata Motors sold 10,728 passenger vehicles in January 2016, 18 per cent less than its January 2015 sales of 13,047 units, the company said in a statement.

The company's commercial vehicles did good business during the month; sales grew by 20 per cent to 30,670 vehicles, up from 25,587 units sold in January 2015.

Most of the car makers are gearing up to the auto show to be held from 5 February to 8 February.

Sensex gains in early morning trade

The S&P BSE Sensex was trading at 24,952.71, up 82 points, or 1.57 per cent, at around 11.45 pm. Stocks that were leading the Sensex rally were Larsen & Toubro, Adani Ports, Cipla and Asian Paints, while Hero Motocorp, Axis Bank and Coal India were pulling it down.

The NSE Nifty was up 26 points, or 0.35 per cent, at 7,590. 

The Indian rupee opened at 67.77, almost flat from its Friday closing of 67.78 level to the US dollar, according to a note by IFA Global.
