Atari is back
"We are back in the hardware business" – Atari CEO Fred ChesnaisTwitter/Atari

The mystery behind the cryptic video on www.ataribox.com is finally solved. In an exclusive interview with GamesBeat at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) 2017, Chesnais confirmed that the company is indeed working on a new gaming console.

Details about this new gaming console, supposedly called "AtariBox," remain unclear. But Chesnais mentioned that the console is based on PC technology.

The only physical evidence of the AtariBox's existence is a 21-second video showing the company's logo illuminated on a slick wooden panel, which is a glimpse of the iconic Atari 2600. The video ends with a message – "Coming Soon" – and asks viewers to sign up with their email address to "be the first to know."

"It's been a long time coming, and yes it is official, and it is very real. Go to http://www.ataribox.com  today & sign up to know more #atari," the company wrote on Twitter along with the teaser.

The new AtariBox is a big deal for the company that has been put through various obstacles in the past that also includes filing bankruptcy in 2013. Chesnais bought the company to make it profitable again, and its current engagement in making mobile games is giving a steady steer in the right direction.

It is too soon to report any development on Atari's new console as Chesnais said as its still in the early stages.

But what really matters to all the Atari fans is that the company is 'back in the hardware business."

The company's last attempt at gaming console with Jaguar in 1993 wasn't a successful one. Comparing AtariBox with next-gen gaming consoles like PS4 and Xbox One might be too optimistic, but it is not odd to see Atari's efforts strike a balance with NES Classic.
